Pre-Socialist Government Beginning to Dictate Treatment

In Uncategorized on November 17, 2009 at 4:49 pm

The government-run health care system will do its best to take care of people.

In an effort to cut costs, a government task force, (the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force) “funded and appointed by the government of the United States” has decided women aged 40-50 do not need mammograms.  These new “guidelines” conflict with the standard of care and recommendations from treating physicians.  The American Cancer Society rejects the government’s nudge toward socialistic cost-cutting measures that will cost lives.  With the government-run health care fast approaching, it may be only a matter of time before actual physicians and physician groups have no medical decision making power.

This government move has already faced strong rebuke from physicians as dangerous and reckless, and will result in unnecessary deaths.

Why do 16 unelected government panel members get to determine what services are offered?  Isn’t that a decision best left to a patient and her physician?

Not one of the 16 unelected government appointee “experts” is an oncologist.  The power of the recommendation comes not from the persuasiveness of their claims; the power of the recommendation comes from the fact that they are powerful and influential government appointees.

When Obama’s plan takes shape, mammography for women 40-50 will be “phased-out” irrespective of patient desire or physician judgement.  The day is near where medical decision making will occur without physician interference.

It will occur by bureaucratic fiat.

What else will be “phased-out” by government task forces?

How will it affect you or your loved ones?

  1. This ignores one very important stipulation of the legislation,. The group you are talking about would no longer be making such recommendations. They would be replaced by a panel of physicians, which would make them MORE qualified than the panels of bureaucrats who currently make those determinations for private insurers.

    • So let me see if I have this straight….

You are celebrating the fact that a bureaucratic group of hand picked doctors that aspired to mandate the standard of care is being replaced by a bureaucratic group of hand picked doctors that has the actual power to mandate the standard of care – against the recommended guidelines established by physician associations based upon research?

That sounds about where the democratic party is headed these days – far to the left of independents and moderates.

Health care decisions are personal choices for individuals and their families – not the government. Everyone’s health care will suffer when government stifles innovation, limits personal health care choice, and interferes with physician practice. Most Americans realize that the proposed government entanglement in healthcare means poorer outcomes, longer waits, more expense, and more corruption.

Most Americans don’t want the government dictating healthcare decisions. I join them.
      Thank you for your post.
